International students in Shanghai embraced the beauty of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) during the "2023 Experiencing China: Discovering the Beauty of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)" event held from Oct 15 to 17.
Organized by the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM) and hosted by the China Scholarship Council, the event provided 50 students from 22 countries with an immersive experience of TCM and Chinese culture.
During the event, participants visited various TCM-related locations such as the Shanghai Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Herb Garden, and Caitongdetang, a renowned TCM pharmacy. They also took part in TCM-related activities, including practicing Wuqinxi (Five-Animal Exercises), making TCM sachets, and attending a TCM lecture online.
These activities allowed students to deepen their understanding of TCM theory, the health benefits of Chinese medicine, the global impact and development of TCM, and TCM practices for health preservation and daily care.
Han Chouping, dean of the School of International Education at SHUTCM, emphasized the significance of the event, stating that Chinese medicine, as a "health messenger," has been spreading and influencing the world. He highlighted how the activity provided international students with the chance to appreciate TCM's charm and experience Chinese culture, especially on the Belt and Road Initiative's 10th anniversary.
A student from Thailand majoring in TCM at SHUTCM, expressed her enjoyment of the activities, saying that the event allowed her to meet new friends and further understand Chinese traditional culture.
